Competitors start just south of
the Rickenbacker Causeway and

Biscayne, then head North to the
harbor entrance where the monohulls finish, and
the multihulls continue on to finish at the Miami Yacht Club.
The proceeds from the last race
went to
the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation.
The
next Conch Cup will be on
Saturday, August 29, 2009.
We will have
a band at the party
following the race, and all
club members and guests are
invited to participate—even
if you do not race.
A Little History of the
Conch Cup
The July, 1977 issue of the
Scuttlebutt states:
"The Miami Yacht Club
sponsored the Conch Cup Race
to Ft. Lauderdale on
Saturday, June 11th."
In addition, an old trophy
for the Conch Cup was found
in our trophy case listing
the winners of the races
held from 1975 to 1981,
quite possibly the era when
the race was to Ft.
Lauderdale. It also
appears the race during its
earliest history might have
been for monohulls only,
because there are no
multihull winners recorded
on this older trophy.
A second Conch Cup trophy
rests on the shelf over the
Bar's windows, and it is a
Catamaran Challenge
Perpetual Trophy listing the
winners from 1984 to 1998.
This second trophy obviously
shows catamarans were
finally included in the
Conch Cup. Exactly
when the race changed from
concluding at Ft. Lauderdale
and became a race around Key
Biscayne is not known at the
present time. The
earliest results retained by
the Club are those for 2003,
and by that time, there were
both monohulls and
multihulls in the race,
which was around Key
Biscayne.
